Larian Studios, the developer known for titles such as its Divinity Series and more importantly, the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, made a rather shocking announcement at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) today. Its founder, Swen Vincke, says that it won’t be making any expansion or DLCs for the latter title, nor is it planning to make a 4th Baldur’s Gate title.
Vincke said that he and Larian want to move away from the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) franchise entirely, putting the fate of the its most popular IP back into the hand’s of its publisher, Wizards of the Coast. It’s a right about turn from what the studio has said in the past; back in 2023, the studio said they had “discussions” about doing more for Baldur’s Gate 3, but gave no further insight as to what exactly the idea of constituted.
To be fair, Larian has released several major patches to Baldur’s Gate 3 that enhanced and improved the game overall, adding among other things, a playable epilogue party. “We’ll carry on patching for a while and then we’re all going to take a holiday and then we’ll figure out what we do next,” Tom Butler, senior product manager at Larian said. “But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don’t know what yet.”
As to what Larian’s plans are beyond the Baldur’s Gate IP, your guess is as good as ours. Speculations hint at a new Divinity; Original Sin title but Vincke did clarify in another interview with IGN that that won’t be happening and that the studio’s next project will be “different than what you think it is” but still familiar.
