The beta for Google Play Games PC was announced in late 2022, with the idea of letting people play Android games natively on PCs. It has a small handful of Windows native titles, but it looks like the internet search giant is looking to massively expand the list.
Google made the announcement as part of its annual Games Developer Summit, opening up native game publishing on its Google Play Games PC for any interested dev. According to Android Police, the only timeline provided was a very broad “this year”, so holding your breath for this in any capacity is a pretty bad idea.
On one hand, the appeal of PC games on the Google Play Games platform is pretty straightforward. Your Google account is used to not only sync your progress on mobile games, but also PC games through different devices. You can also buy them via whatever payment method you’ve tied to your account.
And all this might sound like a good deal for someone who is just expanding from being a mostly mobile gamer to another platform like PC. But on the flip side, synced saves are already a thing on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and in terms of robust features, the former is pretty hard to beat. Google Play Games PC has its work cut out for it when it launches later in the year, whenever that is, if it wants to compete with the incumbents.
