While everyone is going crazy over generative AI these days, some may fondly remember when the Boston Dynamics robot Spot was the star of the show. It’s been awhile since, but it looks like there’s a new derivative of the idea floating around now, and coming from a pretty unexpected source. Its name is the Lenovo Daystar Bot GS.
The official description for this robot is the “Legged Robot For Inspection Solution”. Much like Spot, it’s not something for the average consumer to buy, and for enterprises it serves pretty much the same purposes, complete with an IP66 rating to go with it. Beyond what is presumably the LiDAR sensor, the Lenovo Daystar Bot GS can have other add-ons installed, like a crane arm of sorts, as well as additional sensors.
As part of the official iF Design blurb, the bot is also described as providing “unmatched stability and maneuverability that surpasses traditional robotic platforms, allowing it to traverse diverse terrains with ease”. Traditional in this case probably doesn’t mean things like Spot, but more old-school robots on wheels.
Unlike Spot though, this Lenovo Daystar Bot GS has six legs rather than four, so whatever it is, a dog is definitely not it. It is also unclear what exactly is the advantage of the extra pair of legs provide over the more “conventional” two pairs.
