Transport minister Anthony Loke has revealed during a press conference that Prasarana will soon expand the cashless payment options on Rapid KL buses. This is in addition to the payment expansion for the operator’s rail services such as the LRT and MRT.
Currently, Rapid KL buses only accept Touch ‘n Go cards as payment, which is more restricted than the train services that offer tokens as an alternative. Acknowledging how this affects both tourists and locals, Loke said that the buses will transition to an open payment system that allows the use of debit cards, credit cards, and more.
Loke said last year that Prasarana would begin the infrastructure construction of an open payment system in March 2024. As promised, the company has already initiated a tender process for the system and anticipates that the process will conclude within the next two months.
The minister previously said that the implementation of the new system for Rapid KL train services will take 11 months and it is expected that 50% of gantries will be fitted with the system by February 2025. As for the buses, Loke mentioned that the open payment system will ideally be implemented in the next three to six months, but added, “we hope to have it in place by the end of this year”.
