You’ve seen Doom running on an electronic pregnancy test kit. You’ve heard it being run on scientific calculator, Notepad, an ATM, inside Minecraft; heck, a scientist even managed to get it barely running on a bacterial level. For Husqvarna, a company that specialises in robotic lawnmowers, it decided to go off-brand with its advertising and show off the game running on one its products.
Specifically, Husqvarna is offering owners of its Automower NERA product range the ability to download Doom as an update. There is a catch to this: the game will only be available for download and playable between 9 April and 9 September 2024.
Once downloaded, owners of their Husqvarna Nera mowers will be able to play Doom via their onboard display and the control knob fitted on to them. On that note, the lawnmower brand is only providing the game code for the first episode of the game, and nothing else.
The idea to bring Doom to a lawnmower, of all things, reportedly came about during the DreamHack Winter 2023 gaming event, held in Sweden at the end of 2023. That being said and as fun as it is, we can’t help but think that this was just another excuse to continue the ongoing tradition of running the original demon-killing title on devices that have no business doing so.
