Maxis and Huawei have announced their first 5G-Advanced trial, which is also claimed to be the first in Southeast Asia. This included a live speed test at KLCC The Place, with the showcase area being open to the public for two days.
Foe context, 5G-Advanced, or 5.5G as it is also called, provides up to 10x higher speeds compared to the base 5G, as well as supporting 10x more connected devices. Part of the trial involves running a live speed test, showing the tech achieving peak speeds of slightly over 8Gbps. On the latency front, the tech boasts a 5x improvement in responsiveness.
At the test location, the 5G-Advanced showcase demos use case scenarios like including AR overlays into live recordings and the streaming of 3D images. But as we’ve seen with prior 5G showcases, most of the more practical applications of the tech is in the enterprise sectors, involving passive IoT and Reduced Capability (RedCap) applications.
To describe those two as simply as possible, the latter is for devices that don’t specifically need high speeds of 5G, but can make use of the tech’s better power efficiency, for instance. The former, on the other hand, focuses entirely on efficiency to the point that such devices don’t need their own power supply to function.
As mentioned earlier, the Maxis and Huawei 5G-Advanced showcase at KLCC The Place is open to the public for two days. You can head there either today or tomorrow between 10AM and 10PM to experience the tech in action for yourself. Though it’s worth pointing out that, since this is merely a trial, it will be awhile before the tech becomes widely adopted, and even longer before the average user gets to experience them.
