Nothing has officially announced that its upcoming smartphone, the Phone (2a), will feature a custom Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset. It revealed that the component is a collaborative effort with MediaTek, aimed at delivering top-notch performance while ensuring optimal power usage.
Although the device maintains a clock speed of up to 2.8 GHz, Nothing highlights its enhanced power efficiency for components like the display IC and modem through improved software and hardware integration with MediaTek. According to the company’s product marketing manager Raymond Zhu, this refinement results in a 10% increase in power efficiency compared to the standard Dimensity 7200.
The Phone (2a) boasts 12GB of RAM, with an additional 8GB via virtual memory expansion. Nothing noted that it did consider the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and Snapdragon 782G SoCs for the Phone (2a), but settled on the Dimensity 7200 Pro due to its better performance and power efficiency. Additionally, the Mediatek chipset is claimed to outperform the Snapdragon 778G chipset that’s featured on the Nothing Phone (1) by 18% in terms of power, and is 16% more energy-efficient.
Zhu also mentioned a newly developed Smart Clean technology by the software team, enabling the Phone (2a) to routinely clean fragmented files once or twice a week, resulting in enhanced read and write speeds. This ensures consistent fast performance over time, even after extended use. The upcoming handset is revealed to feature adaptive NTFS technology as well, which enables for fast file transfers with Windows devices.
Nothing has yet to reveal the Phone (2a), but a thumbnail of a video that was recently shared on its official YouTube channel (shown above) may have given away the device’s design. The sketch shown, appearing beside company CEO Carl Pei, matches unofficial renderings of the phone that were shared by several leaksters, including a more recent one from OnLeaks.
