We’re currently past the halfway point of the 9th console generation, with both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X being launched in November of 2020. So it should be no surprise that there’s talk about what the next console generation will bring about. Microsoft has addressed this as part of its official Xbox podcast, claiming that the company’s next generation console will deliver the “largest technical leap” between hardware generations.
Or at least, that’s the aim. In said podcast, Xbox president Sarah Bond said “what we’re really focused on there is delivering the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation”. Which doesn’t really say much at this point, as most gamers already expect a pretty significant jump from one generation to another, minus maybe from Nintendo.
But more interesting than that is the probability of different types. The Verge quotes Phil Spencer as saying that the Xbox hardware team is “creating hardware that sells to gamers because of the unique aspects of the hardware”. No indication as to what this will actually be, but the report paints a picture of a handheld. Not exactly surprising considering the current trend, but if that’s really the case then it’s far from being unique. And if anything, it would be the software that will be pulling weight in that form factor.
Hopefully, all the talk about hardware involves the the Xbox Controller codenamed Sebile revealed as part of the legal tussle for Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard. Just as the DualSense is what makes the PS5 truly next gen, Sebile is probably the thing that will level up the immersiveness of Xbox games in the current generation, never mind the next.
