You know the name OpenAI for ChatGPT and the various versions of of the engine underneath it. But the company may have other aspirations outside of AI, which may include internet search, of all things. And it may be getting some support from partner Microsoft in the venture.
The Information reports that OpenAI has been working on this internet search product for over a year. It’s unclear for now if it will be a tool that supplements ChatGPT, or if it will be a standalone thing. Naturally, if the report is accurate and OpenAI does go further down this path, then it will be butting heads with the dominant entity in the internet search space, Google.
The report also notes that OpenAI’s still unnamed service “would be partly powered by Bing”. Not too surprising, as ChatGPT’s ability to pull info from the web is also supported by the same service. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the company won’t be competing with its partner at all in the internet search business. Despite ChatGPT being a thing already, it didn’t stop Microsoft from announcing Bing Chat, which has since been renamed Copilot.
That being said, these plans for an OpenAI web search service is still being described as being in its early phases, and that plans may change further down the line. Similarly, it remains to be seen what the length of this line is.
