Sony has finally announced the local availability for the redesigned PlayStation 5, which is colloquially known as the PlayStation 5 Slim. The more lightweight console was unveiled last October and shortly afterwards, the company revealed that the updated model will retain its price tag.
The PlayStation 5 Slim gets a volume reduction of 30% compared to the original variant, making it notably smaller and lighter, and it even has a bigger 1TB storage capacity. Moreover, the new version gets a detachable disc drive, meaning that even if you buy the cheaper Digital Edition, you’ll still be able to add on the optical drive at a later date if the need arises, albeit at a higher cost of RM529. That being said, the modular accessory is nowhere to be found on Sony Malaysia’s website, so it is unclear when it will arrive here.
The Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5 Slim retails at RM2,069 while the Disc version costs RM2,499, which are exactly the same prices as when the console received a price hike back in 2022. You can also bundle your purchase with two DualSense wireless controllers for an additional RM300, whereas the vertical stand is now an optional accessory sold separately for RM149.
Both editions of the revamped console are now available for pre-order on Sony Malaysia’s online store. The PlayStation 5 Slim will officially go on sale starting from 20 February 2024.
