A new rumour reported by Brazilian website Universo Nintendo is claiming that the yet-to-be-announced successor to the Nintendo Switch, which we’ll refer to as the Switch 2 throughout this article, will feature a backwards compatibility. What this means is that the upcoming device could support games that were originally released for its seven-year-old predecessor.
Furthermore, the site adds that the Switch 2 is also capable of enhancing older titles, both physical and digital versions, with its additional “processing power”. If the backwards compatibility feature is similar to the ones offered by other video game consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, then it should be capable of boosting an existing game’s performance and resolution.
Meanwhile, separate rumours are suggesting that Nintendo may announce the Switch 2 via an unscheduled Nintendo Direct live stream that’s expected to happen next week. It was also reported that an AI firm had allegedly revealed the console’s launch date by accident, which it quickly retracted shortly after. Prior to the amendment, the company’s press release claimed that the next-gen device is slated to debut in September this year.
Without a doubt, the Switch 2 is looking to be a highly anticipated piece of tech that’s expected to come out this year, especially considering its predecessor’s success. Whether or not Nintendo could capture lightning in a bottle twice remains to be seen.
