One of the strangest possible oversights with the painfully expensive Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset was that it did not allow users to reset their passcode if they’ve been accidentally locked out. If or when the unfortunate has happened, owners of the thing would have had to send it back to an Apple Store, either in person or by mail, and have the staffers factory reset it with a developer tool. But with visionOS 1.0.3, that’s no longer the case.
As MacRumors reports, the visionOS update finally gives users the “option to reset your device if you’ve forgotten your passcode”. Though like before, this looks to still be factory reset, so owners will still be erasing whatever that was stored in the Apple Vision Pro headset. The report notes that doing this will not remove Activation Lock, so there’s little worry about it being used by a thief if you’ve misplaced it out in public.
One explanation as to why this oversight was possible during the development of the Apple Vision Pro is that the fruit company’s devs had said tool, called the Developer Strap, within arm’s reach. The people involved may have completely forgotten that most of the iPhone maker’s customers don’t have such a thing easily accessible, nor need it in any other use case scenario. But here we are.
Or are not, as after all, the Apple Vision Pro remains a US exclusive for now. The company has previously mentioned availability elsewhere later in the year, but has yet to announce a list of markets and their corresponding availability dates.
