At the risk of stating the obvious, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has been a runaway success of a videogame. So it’s not surprising that there are some out there who are interested in making a mobile version of the game. A Reuters report claims that Tencent is one company interested in doing just that, though the attempt is not without problems.
Citing three sources, the report notes that one key issue is the fact that what Tencent has planned for the supposed mobile version of Elden Ring is for it to be a free-to-play model with microtransactions. The report also specifically mentions Genshin Impact by miHoYo, and published by HoYoverse internationally, as a similar title that Tencent wants to emulate.
The obvious problem with the approach is that Elden Ring is a one-time purchase AAA title, and work will be needed to convert it into a free-to-play model. An idea would be for players to create their own character as the game already does. Then, other non-hostile NPCs like Nepheli Loux as gacha characters, but it’s very easy to go too far and invalidate the original, mostly solo experience of the original game.
At any rate, there’s no word on whether Tencent will be seriously pursuing this venture. The report also mentions that the company previously attempted to do the same for the Nier franchise, but the project was axed “over monetisation concerns”.
