It looks like Samsung isn’t the only big tech company to introduce on-device generative AI capabilities this year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is also looking to introduce its very own take on the feature via iOS 18, which is expected to be unveiled during WWDC 2024 later in June.
In his latest report, Gurman notes that iOS 18 will be one of the mobile firmware’s biggest, ambitious and compelling updates in the company‘s history. Along with it is a host of on-device generative AI features, including integrations on Apple’s first-party voice assistant Siri, Messages app, Apple Music, and so on.
Below is a list of features expected from the upcoming firmware update, according to the Bloomberg journalist:
- A revamped version of Siri that is more intelligent and able to take advantage of a new AI system that incorporates large language model technology.
- AI integration in the Messages app that can “field questions and auto-complete sentences”.
- New AI features for Apple Music to create “auto-generated playlists”.
- Integrating generative AI into iWork apps, including Keynote and Pages.
- Adding generative AI features to Xcode to let developers “write new applications more quickly”.
The implementation of generative AI on Siri is perhaps one of the more interesting additions, as this could potentially expand upon its abilities in both conversational and user assistance. Apart from those listed above, it is expected that Apple may introduce other AI-powered features on iOS 18, especially if it intends to outdo its rival’s Galaxy AI system. However, we’ll only know for sure if Gurman’s report is accurate or not once Apple’s WWDC summit arrives later this year.
