Earlier this month, ASUS unveiled its new ROG Phone 8 series at CES 2024. The latest gaming smartphone lineup consists of three devices and this time around, the company decided to tone down the “gamer-y” design and opted for a more mainstream concept.
The three phones are essentially the same and only differ by the RAM and storage configurations. For the display, the phones are fitted with a 6.78-inch 1080p AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, and a peak brightness of 2,500 nits. For protection, they are equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 as well as an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.
Under the chassis is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and can be configured with up to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage, powered by a 5,500mAh battery that supports 65W wired and 15W wireless charging. On the imagine side, the ROG Phone 8 series offers a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, a 32MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 32MP front shooter.
Of course, being an ROG device, it still has some gaming-centric features and livery. For one thing, the vanilla model has an LED logo on the back while the Pro variants get an “AniMe” programmable mini-LED feature that allows you to customise notifications and showcase animations. There is also the AirTrigger shoulder controls that give you more control options when gaming and a second USB-C port on the side so you can game while charging.
The ROG Phone 8 is available now and starts from RM3,999 for a 12GB+256GB configuration whereas the Pro with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is priced at RM4,799. Finally, the top-of-the-line ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition comes with a whopping 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, retailing at RM5,999.
The AeroActive Cooler X is included with the Pro Edition, but for the other two phones, it is sold separately at RM349. However, the brand has a launch promo from 30 January to 20 February 2024 where, during this period, all three phones get an extended warranty while purchases of the base ROG Phone 8 come with the cooler for free.
