For all those who’ve just tuned in, Samsung has recently introduced its (mostly) on-device generative AI feature known as Galaxy AI. This is currently exclusively available via the recently launched Galaxy S24 series, though it has been confirmed by the tech giant that users still on its older devices will eventually get the opportunity to use it as well.
As revealed by Samsung during its Unpacked event last night, Galaxy AI will also be introduced on last year’s Galaxy S23 series (including the FE), Tab S9 family, as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 models. Unfortunately, anything older than that, such as the Galaxy S22 series and so on, will be left in the cold.
While no exact date has been confirmed, Samsung did say a rollout is expected to happen sometime by mid-2024. Chances are that the timing will likely differ depending on model and region, so some owners of the aforementioned devices may have to wait a while longer than others.
As for future devices, a representative told us that Samsung is still continuing to develop and improve Galaxy AI, ensuring that it’ll be ready to be offered together with any potential upcoming releases. When asked whether the feature would also eventually come to its mid-range devices, we were told that the brand could not confirm anything at this time.
Of course, some of the AI tools that were introduced last night, such as the Circle to Search, are not exclusive to the Galaxy S24. As officially confirmed by Google, this feature is also available on its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, so the possibility of it being one of the earliest to be introduced on other Samsung devices is quite high. However, we still have to wait and see if this ever ends up being the case.
On a related note, the Samsung representative also clarified that the brand won’t be charging its Galaxy AI service. This is a response to an official document which noted that the feature will be provided for free until 2025, which was first spotted by 9to5Google. The rep explained that the fine print was added for the sake of transparency, and that there are currently no plans to lock any of Galaxy AI’s tools behind a paywall.
