Yoodo has removed the extra charge for its 5G pass and is now offering it as a free ad-on for users. This follows the announcement by Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil that there will no longer be extra charges for 5G access after months of discussions with telcos.
After the Celcom-owned MVNO ended its free trial back in July, it started charging an extra RM5 for users to be able to access the faster network via an add-on pass. A couple of months ago, it lowered the price of the pass to RM1 for those who purchase at least 40GB of data. Now, the pass is being offered for free on the app regardless of how much data you buy for your plan.
In our testing, the 5G pass seems to be enabled by default when you’re purchasing a new plan on the Yoodo app, but if for some reason you don’t want it, you can actually choose to opt out of it. For users who are currently on an active plan without the 5G pass, you will have to wait until your next billing cycle for the feature to be enabled.
CelcomDigi seems to be the only major holdout left as its websites still list some of its older and cheaper postpaid and prepaid plans, including XPAX Postpaid 40, as requiring the 5G booster in order to enable access. As for Maxis, it has been offering the 5G pass for free to Hotlink users for some time now, but this is still listed under a “limited time promotion”. The MCMC encourages customers to file complaints regarding telcos that still charge extra for 5G.
