Malaysia and SIngapore are exploring ways to implement passport-free travel between both countries. In a joint statement, the former’s economy ministry and the latter’s trade and industry ministry said the approach is among the initiatives aimed at supporting the development of the Johor-Singapore special economic zone (JS-SEZ).
A passport-free QR code system would also be explored as a potential method to expedite clearance at land checkpoints, the statement adds. In accordance with the provisions outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed between the two ministries today, both countries recognised the importance of enhancing the cross-border transportation of goods and individuals, while also strengthening the business environment within the JS-SEZ.
It’s also worth noting that Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) previously announced a similar passport-free QR code system last year as part of its New Clearance Concept initiative. However, this particular approach only applies to vehicles departing the country via the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints, though travellers are still required to present their documents when entering Malaysia.
In addition to the elimination of passport requirements for travel, there will be the establishment of an all-encompassing business and investment service centre in Johor. This centre aims to streamline the application procedures for various approvals and licences required by Singaporean businesses to establish a presence in the region.
Further initiatives include the implementation of a digitised process for cargo clearance at land checkpoints, the joint hosting of an investor forum to gather feedback, the coordination of training and work-based learning programs to address talent skill gaps, the organisation of promotional events to enhance trade and investment in the JS-SEZ, and the facilitation of collaboration in renewable energy between the two nations.
