Comms minister Fahmi Fadzil has shared some updates regarding the transfer of government agencies that were previously under his ministry. As you may recall, the communications and digital ministry was split into two by prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in a Cabinet reshuffle last month, with Damansara MP Gobind Singh Deo tasked with helming the latter.
As announced by Fahmi today, agencies including MAMPU, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC), and Cybersecurity Malaysia (CSM) will now be under the management of the newly established digital ministry. He also added that the latter will use another name, which will only be announced at a later date.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will remain under the communications ministry. Fahmi also revealed that MIMOS, which was previously under the prime minister’s office, will be transferred back to the ministry of science, technology and innovation (MOSTI). However, it is noted that the company’s MYDigital ID project will remain under the prime minister’s office at this time and will be transferred to the digital ministry at a later date.
In addition, the comms minister said that the government is expected to announce the transition of one wholesale network to a dual network within this month. He also revealed that the implementation of 5G in populated areas across the nation had reached 80.2% as of 31 December 2023, therefore hitting the goal that was set initially.
