The minister of communications Fahmi Fadzil has recently declared that there will be no extra fees for 5G services from now onwards. This implies that individuals opting for postpaid or prepaid plans can now access the network without needing to purchase additional “booster” passes.
The move encourages users to embrace 5G services, thereby contributing to an increased adoption rate of 5G in Malaysia. Notably, certain telcos such as U Mobile and Maxis have already made access to the newer network infrastructure available for free, while others continue to designate it as an additional paid feature.
“Back when 3G was upgraded to 4G, there was no additional charge,” Fahmi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Today, I’m announcing that there will be no more extra charges for 5G services.
Prior to this, the minister had previously stated that the government would take action against service providers charging extra fees for 5G access. This stance is rooted in the fact that the infrastructure by DNB is funded with public resources, making it inappropriate to impose additional costs on customers.

Changes in accordance to Fahmi’s announcement are expected to be made by certain telcos in the coming days. For now, it is uncertain whether users who have already paid for 5G access before this will be reimbursed through rebates or other methods.
