While generative AI chatbots may be fun to play with, and even useful for some, it has not yet gotten to a point where it can do what your digital assistant on your phone can. Though code within the Android app of ChatGPT indicates that, at the very least, you may be able to launch it the same way as you would the Google Assistant.
Android Authority found code within said ChatGPT Android app that indicated just that. The feature is still incomplete, as the code to make it the default digital assistant app “is only partially there” according to the report. But getting it to work this way brings up the same animation as when you run the in-app voice chat mode, but overlaying the home screen instead.
Even if all this does come to pass, as mentioned above, it remains to be seen if anyone would replace the usual Google Assistant shortcut with this. For now, it doesn’t look like the ChatGPT digital assistant will be able to have the same level of app integration. Which means that you won’t be able to ask it to set alarms or reply to your emails for example, the way you can get the default Google Assistant to.
The report also mentions the rollout of Google Assistant with Bard in the coming months, basically integrating its own generative AI model with the assistant. On the surface, this immediately seems like the more practical option, as the assistant is still in the equation. But we’ll have to wait until both are widely available before we will be able to tell for sure.
