We’ve seen the ASUS ROG Phone 8 being teased a bit, as well as some leaks, the veracity of which is still very much in question. More recently, the brand has revealed something about the upcoming gaming phone that would be a first for the series: an IP68 rating.
This comes via the company’s post on Chinese social media Weibo. This is something that prior models, especially the immediate predecessor models, did not have, likely due to the cooling mechanism involving a physical vent to improve airflow. For reference, the ROG Phone 7 had an IP54 rating attached to it.
On one hand, the improved rating means that you can have your mind more at ease when using the phone in less-than-ideal conditions. But on the flip side, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 coming with an IP68 rating likely also means that it won’t have the flashy cooling system that the previous models have. And indeed, the existing teasers and leaks do give that impression, what with the device’s much simpler-looking back.
Incidentally, the brand’s official account on X, formerly Twitter, posted a familiar video that previously on Weibo, showing the ASUS ROG Phone 8 with its “edgeless frame” design. Like before, this design looks to be coming at the cost of proper stereo front-firing speakers.
Going edgeless!

The post in question also mentions once again the official announcement date of the ASUS ROG Phone 8 falling on 8 January, coinciding with CES 2024. Nothing really new on this front, but there’s also now a link to a web page with a countdown timer to when it’s actually happening. There’s also a contest going on giving participants a chance to win an ROG Ally, though which model specifically has not been made clear. That being said, the contest is taking entrants from Malaysia, and involves making ROG-related posts on social media. You can find out more about this by hitting this link.
