Many gamers have been relying on the Xbox and PC Game Pass to discover their next favourite game. However, people who are eager to play Larian Studios’ hit game, Baldur’s Gate 3, on the gaming service would be hard-pressed to know that that will not come to pass (pun intended).
After a rocky development cycle, 2023’s Game of the Year had just arrived on Xbox, but Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke had shot down any hopes of it coming to Xbox’s subscription service. In an interview with IGN, he emphasised that “it wasn’t going to be on the Game Pass,” and that “it’s not going to be on Game Pass.”
In a new interview with IGN, Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke responded to questions about Baldur’s Gate 3 being on Xbox Game Pass, explaining why the best RPG of 2023 won’t be on Microsoft’s subscription service anytime soon.

Vincke went a step further by describing the topic as a “sensitive question,” explaining that they are in the business of “making a game that has a beginning, middle, and an end,” and reasoned that the asking price for such a large game with no microtransactions to speak of is worth every cent. Looking at the discussion from this point of view makes a lot more sense, especially if you consider the fact that it takes more than 140 hours to complete the game, according to HowLongToBeat.
This interview and discussion have added more fuel to the gaming subscription service discourse as a whole. Paying monthly fee for a vast library of games is definitely worth it, especially for those who simply can’t afford current titles like Baldur’s Gate 3. It is also a great space for smaller studios, as it gives them and their creations some much-needed exposure. On the other hand, some are calling the service “value destructive,” which is something that Larian might be avoiding with their game.
With all of its accomplishments and positive word of mouth, Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most successful Steam games available. The game has sold over 20 million copies as of writing, and the number is looking to rise even more as it has recently been made available on PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S.
