The Ministry of Health (MOH) has recommended a third booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, especially for vulnerable and high-risk groups. Its minister, Dr. Dzulkefly bin Ahmad, said that he had informed the Cabinet yesterday about the recent increase in cases in Malaysia, and that special attention should be given to the current situation.
According to reports, a total of 12,757 COVID-19 cases have been reported during the 49th Epidemiological Week from 3 to 9 December 2023, which is a significant leap over the 6,796 recorded cases from the week prior. Additionally, it is said that admissions to healthcare facilities for the use of both non-critical and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds have also risen 1.4% compared to the previous week.
Dzulkefly, speaking to reporters after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly today, said that the surge in cases was due to the weather conditions as well as inter-state movement of people during the year-end holiday season. In regards to the third COVID-19 booster, the minister noted that there is sufficient stock of vaccines available which were effective in protecting the public from mutated infections and new variants. He also stressed that supplementary shots are necessary to protect vulnerable groups including senior citizens and those with comorbidities.
The health minister also urged that the public should wear face masks when in crowded places and if they’re experiencing symptoms. On the need for tight screening at entry points to the country, he said appropriate intervention and mitigation measures should be taken immediately if necessary.
