WhatsApp has announced a steady stream of new features the past few months, and today, the Meta subsidiary has announced a new one. This time, it involves letting you pin messages to the top of conversations, and this works for both group and personal chats on the platform. Though we did see reports of the feature being tested back in October.
According to the announcement, the first step to pinning a WhatsApp message to the top of a chatbox is my giving the message a long press. Once the context menu shows up, hitting “Pin” option will give you a choice of highlighting the message for a day, a week or a month. This oddly rigid selection is similar to what we’ve seen back in October, so in the same vein, it’s likely you can unpin them manually once they’re no longer applicable.
WhatsApp also says that for group chats specifically, admins will be able to determine if only they can pin messages, or if the feature is made open to all members. Which can no doubt be handy for larger groups, especially for those where not every member is necessarily familiar with one another.

Pinned messages is now being rolled out to users, but as is usually the case with feature roll-outs, it’s a gradual process. At the time of writing, we don’t yet have access to the feature, and no WhatsApp update is available on the mobile app. Though with the official announcement out of the way, it’s only a matter of time before it gets to you.
