AmBank has announced that its credit cards are now supported on Google Wallet. This means that customers of the bank can now use their cards to make cashless transactions over the counter using their phones through Google Pay.
Google Wallet officially launched in Malaysia last year and at that time, it only supported certain cards from CIMB, Hong Leong, and HSBC. Since then, it has expanded support for Standard Chartered, Wise, and now AmBank, along with Bonuslink’s virtual loyalty card.
According to its FAQ [PDF], the virtual wallet supports all AmBank and AmBank Islamic’s cards except for its UnionPay credit card and the Mastercard debit card. The same card can be added to up to a limit of 10 devices and as for supplementary cards, it needs to be added to the app separately. The card should be activated immediately after being added but the bank states that it can sometimes that up to 10 minutes after the request for enrolment.
With AmBank now in the mix, Maybank remains as one of the few major local banks not supported by Google’s payment app. That being said, this situation might change soon as a banner for Google Pay was recently spotted in Maybank’s MAE app before being removed.
