PayNet has introduced a new app designed specifically for tourists in Malaysia called MY TouristPay. This app aims to make cashless payments for seamless for visitors by enabling them to make payments using DuitNow, the country’s interoperable QR code system.
DuitNow is only supported by locally registered banks, meaning that tourists aren’t able to transact using the QR code unless they are using an app from Thailand, Indonesia, or Singapore that supports cross-border QR payments. With TouristPay, visitors only need to sign up on the app and add a credit or debit card issued outside of Malaysia.
After adding their card, they can scan the DuitNow QR code of any merchant, input the amount, and they can make payments just like any local. When registering, tourists will need to provide their full name as per their passport, an email address, and a phone number.
This is just the most recent of PayNet’s efforts to enable visitors from other countries to make purchases in Malaysia using e-wallets and QR codes. Last month, it launched a collaboration with ANT Group to enable DuitNow support with Alipay+ partner e-wallets from eight countries, with reciprocal support to be introduced gradually.
