The trailer for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto sequel is finally upon us, but it came a little too soon than anticipated after a leaker had released it on X, formerly known as Twitter, just hours before the scheduled time. Because of this, Rockstar Games responded by releasing the trailer in full on their official YouTube channel.
Though this leak was smaller than usual, it is still quite significant, especially since Rockstar is known for not divulging information about their games beyond official trailers. This would be the second time information about Grand Theft Auto VI has been released, the first of which revealed an hour-long gameplay and testing footage following a network intrusion, which resulted in a teenager in the UK getting arrested.
Throughout the 10-year-long wait, fans of the franchise were finally graced with the official trailer for the new game. Though only lasting 90 seconds, the trailer is jam-packed as it takes us back to Vice City, a fictionalised city found in Florida that has already been featured in two prior GTA games. Not only that, we also get a quick look at the first female protagonist for the franchise, named Lucia, who is first seen in a prison jumpsuit then robbing up a convenience store with another, currently unnamed, character whom she has a Bonnie and Clyde dynamic with.
Though the trailer largely showed what life is like in the crime-filled city – from gators to strippers (oh my) – there is a brief scene featuring a man covered in tattoos being broadcast on a Spanish-language TV. Though this does not tie in with images of Vice City, it most likely has something to do with Lucia, a person we suspect to be of Spanish descent.
After all of this, of course, it was revealed that the game will be released in 2025. Though this was all unceremoniously released ahead of time, karmic justice would immediately be served as the leaker’s X account was quickly suspended at the same time Rockstar scrambled to have the trailer go live on their official channel.
It’s also worth noting that this will be the first major Rockstar title to be produced without Dan Houser in the lead. Houser left the company in 2020 after nearly two decades as a lead writer and major force in nearly all of the studio’s games.
