Redtone and SpaceX have signed a deal that allows the former to be an authorised reseller for Starlink, the latter’s satellite internet service. This comes a few months after the service itself started becoming available in general for Malaysians.
There are a few key differences though between signing up for the Starlink service directly or via Redtone. From the latter’s website, going this route would remove the hardware costs from the equation, meaning no heavy up-front payment to use the service. Customers will also “be assigned a dedicated manager who will offer optimal solutions and provide network design advice”.
On that note, the Redtone partnership with Starlink looks to cater more to government and enterprise customers, rather than your average users. The Malay Mail cites the former’s CEO Lau Bik Soon as saying that “we are targeting sectors which are showing an increasing reliance on satellite services such as oil and gas, telecommunications, shipping and maritime, financial services and plantations”.
Similarly, on the dedicated Starlink page on its website, the telco does not provide any plans or prices for its Starlink offerings. Instead, interested customers are asked to contact the company to discuss possible options instead. We’ve reached out to the company on this matter and will let you know if we get any further details.
