Would-be Tesla EV owners should take note that using the complimentary Wall Connector to charge other vehicles within its 12-month warranty period will void it entirely. This insight was shared by Malaysian Electric Vehicles Owners Club (MyEVOC) member Badrul Hisham, who was informed of this detail through a WhatsApp conversation with a Tesla Approved Installer.
It is explained that the Tesla Home Charging Programme (HCP) includes a condition where customers are not allowed to modify any part of the wall connector’s installation or settings, as any unauthorised adjustments will void warranty eligibility. As noted by the technician, this includes changing the “Only Tesla” setting in the Access Controls menu, which can be accessed via the Tesla mobile app.
Keep in mind that the 12-month warranty period only applies to the complimentary version of the wall connector that’s provided to those who’ve ordered a new Tesla vehicle before 31 October 2023 in Malaysia. According to the brand’s Singapore branch, standalone versions of the charger that are installed for personal use will receive a 48-month warranty, while those used commercially will get 12 months instead. It is unclear whether the warranty policy will be the same in Malaysia since Tesla has yet to offer the device on its own for the local market.
In any case, this isn’t great news for users who also own EVs from other brands, as this means that you’ll need to install a different wall connector in order to charge your non-Tesla vehicle – unless if you don’t mind waiting for the 12-month period to end. It is unclear how the company will actually track your usage but regardless, it’s better not to void the warranty since you might actually need it sooner or later.
