Samsung has already unveiled Gauss, its in-house generative AI that comes with Language, Code and Image sub-models. While it’s not exactly clear in what way it will be making its appearance in the consumer market, the South Korean tech giant also announced another application of artificial intelligence that will likely show up in either its phones or accessories. This is because the company has decided to call this one Galaxy AI.
According to the announcement, Samsung claims that the Galaxy AI is “powered by both on-device AI developed at Samsung and cloud-based AI enabled by our open collaborations with like-minded industry leaders”. No further elaboration on that front, and while it’s not necessarily the case, the former may be related to the aforementioned Gauss generative AI.
At any rate, one of the key features of the Samsung Galaxy AI is what the company calls AI Live Translate Call, something that will be embedded into the native calling feature of its phones. What it does is provide audio and text translations in real-time as you speak to the person on the other side of the call. Samsung says that this runs on-device, so there’s a measure of privacy protection her, but at the same time, it sounds like both ends of the call need to have a compatible phone to use the feature.
Samsung says that the Galaxy AI is “coming early next year”, with no specific dates, or on which device it will be available on. As mentioned earlier, judging from the name, it will likely be coming to phones and accessories bearing the name. But at the same time, there’s a chance that it will be locked to newer hardware.
