Apple announced it new MacBook Pro laptop, powered by its new M3 series of processors. To be precise and in true Apple spirit, the fruit company is releasing multiple SKUs of its new Pro laptop, with the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max available across the two laptop sizes: 14-inch and 16-inch.
So, to state the obvious, the new MacBook Pro laptops are powered by Apple’s latest 3nm M3 silicon, which it claims is 30% faster than its progenitor, the M1 family of chips. “The M3 family of chips continues Apple silicon’s tremendous pace of innovation. M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max are the first chips for a personal computer built using the industry-leading 3-nanometer technology. With a faster, more efficient next-generation GPU, these chips deliver the biggest leap forward in graphics architecture ever for Apple silicon. Featuring a breakthrough technology called Dynamic Caching, the GPU allocates the use of local memory in hardware in real time so only the exact amount of memory needed is used for each task. This dramatically increases GPU utilisation and performance for the most demanding pro apps and games.”
Like its predecessor, all versions of the MacBook Pro ships out with Apple’s Liquid Retina XDR display, a FHD webcam, immersive six-speaker sound system, a gift basket of connectivity options, but more importantly, these new M3-powered machines are able to offer up to 22 hours of battery life.
In keeping with its “One more thing…” mantra, Apple announced that the new MacBook Pro will be available in one new colour, Space Black. This new colour is in addition to the already existing Space Grey and Silver colour options.
Regarding the OS, all new M3 Series MacBook Pro laptops will run on MacOS Sonoma out of the box. One of the advantages Apple boasts with the combination of the new processors and the OS allows the machines to execute features such a new high performance mode that allows Screen Sharing and remote access to another Mac. There’s also Game Mode, which prioritises graphics-based tasks (read: gaming) keeping the framerates high and significantly reducing latency with wireless accessories, such as controllers. On that note, Apple did show off Baldur’s Gate 3 running on the M3 silicon and we got to say, it does look mildly impressive.
M3 and M3 Pro models of the MacBook Pro will be available starting next week, while models with the M3 Max processor will be available in November.
Pricing for the new 14-inch M3-powered MacBook Pro laptop series starts from RM7,039 for the education, while the standard retail price for this model starts at RM7,499. For the 14-inch M3 Pro model, its education pricing starts at RM9,249, while standard retail pricing starts at RM9,999. Lastly, the 14-inch model with the M3 Max processor will retail RM14,799 and sadly, there doesn’t appear to be a special education pricing for this model.
As for the 16-inch MacBook Pro models, they ship out with the M3 Pro as the baseline processor by default, with pricing starting at RM11,039 for those in the educational sector. For the normies, the pricing starts at RM11,999.
Go up the 16-inch MacBook Pro ladder a step and you’ll get the model fitted the M3 Max, which is Apple’s most powerful SKU of the M3 trio. Pricing starts at RM15,999 for the model with the 14-core, 30-core GPU M3 Max processor, while the top-tier model with the 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU tops out at RM17,999. Oh, and before we forget, both the M3 Pro and M3 Max models of this size have the option of shipping in the new Space Black colour.
