Back in May, WhatsApp introduced Chat Lock, the ability for users to lock specific chats behind either passwords or biometric locks. But for those who deem this insufficient, the messaging app may be letting you hide them altogether.
WABetaInfo reports that the feature has made its way to the latest beta version of WhatsApp on Android. As it works now, as long as you have at least one locked chat, it will appear in your list of chats as its own category. While accessing this still requires unlocking them using either the aforementioned passwords or biometric key, they still sort of announce the existence of such private chats.
When toggled, this feature allows these locked chats to not appear at all. Unlocking them would also require a slightly different method. Which is entering either your phone’s PIN, or a separate secret code for this specific purpose, into the search bar instead. The secret code bit was first announced alongside the initial rollout of Chat Lock.
It’s not the most groundbreaking of features, but for those who are invested in the secrecy behind their chat logs, this may be the small change that they have been waiting for. All that being said, there’s still no word on when the feature will be rolled out to the general release version of WhatsApp.
