Details of Qualcomm’s upcoming and next-generation mobile chipset have leaked and we now have a name: the Snapdragon X Elite. As you would expect, the SoC is a brand new chip, spearheading the charge with all-new high-performance CPU and GPU cores.
To start, the X Elite is based on a 4nm SoC that supports generative AI via its new Hexagon Neural Processing Unit (NPU). For the CPU, the chipset houses 12 units of “Oryon” CPU cores, which are based on a 64-bit architecture and can boost up to 3.8GHz on all cores or up to 4.3GHz on either a single-core or dual-core boost.
As for the GPU cores, Qualcomm has reverted to simply calling the GPU segment of the X Elite SoC simply as the Adreno. Namesake notwithstanding, the leaks claims that the new GPU is able to deliver an impressive 4.6TFLOPs of power. For comparison sake, that’s more than computational power than even an Xbox Series S, and that’s based on an AMD RDNA2 architecture.
Another benefit of the X Elite is that the SoC will offer compatibility with LPDDR5X memory running at speeds of up to 8533MT/s, as well as support eight channels of 16-bit width. That, and memory capacity support of up to 64GB.
Wireless connectivity has also been upgraded, with the X Elite now supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, compared to the current support of Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 Qualcomm’s current generation chipsets. More importantly, the new high-end chipset also supports AV1 encoding and decoding.
As to when the Snapdragon X Elite chipset will be able available, the leaks put its launch sometime in mid-2024, which is also around the same time Intel’s Meteor Lake and AMD Strix Point chipsets for next-generation mobile systems would also be right and truly available.
