It was just earlier this month when rumours of an Apple Pencil 3 showed up on the internet, claiming to come with things like magnetically attached tips. What we got recently was decidedly not that. Instead, it is a strange entry for the stylus series that comes with USB-C charging, but seems to do less than even the first generation Pencil.
Design-wise, this new Apple Pencil actually looks like the second generation iteration, with one small difference. At the top is a sliding cap which covers the USB-C port. Being similar in every other way, at least on the outside, does mean it has a flat side, allowing it to magnetically attach to the flat iPad sides. This includes the 10th generation iPad, which was oddly incompatible with the Pencil 2.
Despite the ability to attach magnetically to any iPad that has gone through the redesign though, it doesn’t wirelessly pair or charge this way like the Apple Pencil 2. For those, you’ll still need a cable. This new pencil has also seem to have lost its pressure sensitivity support.
Making sense of all this is the price of this new Apple Pencil, which is the most affordable of the lot, costing RM399. For reference, the first Pencil has an asking price of RM479, while the Pencil 2 has a RM599 price tag. Apple does say that this newest Pencil is coming soon, but stopped short of providing an exact date.
