The Apple Pencil 2 was launched all the way back in 2018, alongside the third generation iPad Pro, the first to sport its current blocky design. There hasn’t been much word on a successor, at least not until now. While the change with the supposed Apple Pencil 3 looks to be pretty minor on the surface, it may be something that power users of the tool can appreciate.
According to a leakster who goes by Majin Bu on X, formerly Twitter, the Apple Pencil 3 will look pretty similar to the current design, with only one key difference. This comes in the form of interchangeable magnetic tips. The idea is for each tip to be more ideal for a specific use. Specifically highlighted as part of the leak are technical drawings and even painting.
With the current Pencil models, the tips are screwed on, making them easy to replace while also being attached securely to the main body. The magnetic tips of the supposed Apple Pencil 3 will make them easier to swap out for different use case scenarios. But on the flip side, it sounds like it would also make it easier for the attached tip to get detached, and go missing as a result.

No release date was attached to this Apple Pencil 3 rumour, but next year alongside the rumoured iPad Pro revamp might be as good a time as any. These, alongside their improved Magic Keyboards, were previously rumoured to be unveiled in the middle of next year. And if they are going to be as much a major improvement as the rumours make them out to be, then an accompanying new stylus accessory is not too far a reach. But either way, best to take all these rumours with a grain of salt.
