U Mobile has collaborated with Qualcomm and The Food Merchant (TFM) to develop a smart trolley proof-of-concept called the TROLLEE P1, which is a smart shopping cart that aims to make shopping in supermarkets easier for customers. The telco is providing the connectivity for the smart shopping cart, which is powered by chipsets from Qualcomm.
The PoC will be running at TFM’s outlet at Pavilion Embassy, Jalan Ampang, for a limited time and during this period, it will be collecting feedback from shoppers. This concept is similar to the EzyCart by NanoMalaysia but with one major difference that we’ll get into in a bit.
The TROLLEE P1 has a touch display that allows shoppers to search for specific items and then have the cart navigate them to the products in the store. With an in-store positioning system, the screen will also show ads when users are near products with an ongoing promotion.
To help fast-track the purchasing experience, shoppers need to scan each product they intend to purchase before putting them in the cart. This is where the gap lies between the TROLLEE P1 and EzyCart. The former still requires you to go to a cashier, who will scan your cart to tally your purchase, and make a payment there whereas the latter foregoes the need for a cashier as you can pay for your groceries right on the cart itself.
U Mobile adds that the smart shopping cart’s proprietary hardware and software are able to capture data on shopper patterns and preferences, which can be analysed for marketing and efficiency purposes. The PoC is currently ongoing and the company has not given an end date for its limited run.
