Remember the cool retro-inspired Nikon Z fc mirrorless camera that was launched back in 2021? The good news is that the Japanese camera maker has recently unveiled the successor to the model, the Nikon Zf, which also offers a combination of a classic design with modern-age tech.
The newer model looks no different from its two-year-old predecessor; sporting the same Nikon FM2 film camera inspired look, though it is significantly larger and heavier. Looking past the vintage aesthetics, the Zf’s features a 3.69 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 0.8x magnification, and a 3.2-inch vari-angle TFT touchscreen with 2.1 million dots resolution. Interface-wise, the camera comes with a USB-C connector, a Type D HDMI port, a 3.5mm jack, a UHS-II SD and UHS-I microSD card slots, while its onboard wireless connectivity support includes WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0.
Under the hood, the Nikon Zf is equipped with a 24.5MP full-frame backside-illuminated CMOS sensor that’s paired together with the brand’s EXPEED 7 image processor. It also offers an ISO range of 100 to 64,000, hybrid phase-detection/contrast autofocus (AF) with AF assist and 273 focus points, 5-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) with 8.0 stops, automatic subject detection, as well as 3D and subject tracking capabilities. One unique feature that’s available on the camera is a pixel-shift shooting mode that can capture a high resolution 96MP image by combining 4, 8, 16 or 32 RAW files.
For video, the new retro-inspired Nikon camera is capable of recording 4K/30p footage oversampled from 6K, 4K/60p via the DX (APS-C) image area, and also 1080p at 120 fps. Additionally, it offers in-camera 10-bit H.265 recording and can capture videos to an external recorder over USB-C or HDMI.
The Zf uses the brand’s EN-EL15c removable Li-ion battery that’s also included together, which can be charged via the onboard USB-C port or a MH-34/MH-25A charger that’s sold separately. According to Nikon, the camera is able to capture up to 360 shots and record around 90 minutes of video on a single charge.
For select markets, the Nikon Zfc is set to ship out in mid-October at a recommended retail price of US$2,000 (~RM9,371) for body only, US$2,240 (~RM10,495) when included together with a retro-styled Nikkor Z 40mm f/2 SE lens, or US$2,600 (~RM12,182) when bundled with a Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens. In case you’re wondering, the two-year-old Zfc is currently retailing at RM3,570 for body only, at least via local camera distributor YL Camera.
Like its predecessor, the camera is also available in various colour options, though choosing anything other than the standard black option will cost an additional US$100 (~RM468). There’s no news of whether the new shooter is coming to Malaysia just yet, but the brand’s local Facebook page has been building some hype for it.
