At the start of last year, head of WhatsApp Will Cathcart was quoted as saying that the company would love to make a version of the app for the iPad. At the time, the exec noted that it has been a feature that’s been much requested. Now, it looks like we’re finally seeing signs of it being a reality.
WABetaInfo reports that the latest build of the WhatsApp TestFlight app has an iPad version as well. And from the shared screenshots, it looks just about like what you’d expect from the messaging app. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that it looks identical to the experience on the desktop version.
Like any other device, you can link your WhatsApp account to an iPad using the companion mode. The process is the same too – all you need to do is look for the option to “Link a device”, then get your primary phone to scan the displayed QR code.
Though the report notes that since the iPad version of the messaging app is currently still in beta, the companion mode that comes in tow may also not be fully functional yet. Though these still-locked functions are more things you’d use on your primary device anyway, such as those related to status updates and love locations.
While the appearance of an iPad app for the beta version of WhatsApp is an encouraging sign, there’s no indication as to when it will be released to the general user base. It could take a few months, judging from the gap between previous features being discovered in beta and their general release.
