Xiaomi has recently launched the 5G variant of its entry-level Redmi 12 smartphone in Malaysia. It is the third model under the series, joining the 4G-only version and the Redmi 12C that debuted for the local market earlier this year. However, the company revealed that this particular device is exclusively offered as part of two CelcomDigi postpaid plans, namely the Celcom Mega 98 and Digi Postpaid 90.
The newer Redmi 12 5G shares a similar design as the 4G variant, though the same can’t be said for most of its specifications. For starters, it features the same 6.79-inch display with FHD+ (2460 x 1080 pixels) resolution, 396ppi, 90Hz adaptive refresh rate, and peak brightness of 550nits. Also onboard is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, loudspeaker, a USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack, while the phone itself is dust and splash resistant with a rating of IP53.
Under its hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset that’s paired together with an Adreno 613 GPU, as well as 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. Besides that, the Redmi 12 5G runs on Android 13 via Xiaomi’s MIUI 14, and comes with dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC wireless connectivity. There’s also a built-in IR blaster which enables you to use it as a remote control for compatible devices. Meanwhile, powering the phone is a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.
The glass back on the Redmi 12 5G only features a dual camera setup, which comprises a 50MP f/1.8 primary with 4-in-1 pixel binning and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. Missing from this model is the 4G model’s 8MP ultra-wide, which is instead replaced by an LED flash unit. In front, housed within the display’s punch-hole cutout is a 5MP camera for selfies and video calls.
The new Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G is priced at RM1,099, but getting it as part of the Celcom Mega 98 or Digi Postpaid 90 postpaid plan under a 24-month contract will cost you an upfront payment of only RM49. Alternatively, if you’re planning to get the phone on its own, certain local distributors such as DirectD are offering it at the aforementioned retail price. As for colour options, the phone is available in Midnight Black, Sky Blue and Polar Silver.
