Alongside the first Countryman EV, BMW subsidiary brand MINI has also unveiled its 2024 all-electric Cooper hatchback. Unlike its predecessor, the new model features a refreshed three-door design and is offered in two electric powertrain options, which the company dubs as the “E” and “SE”. It’s also worth mentioning that the EV is based on the Spotlight EV platform co-developed by the BMW Group and Ora Good Cat manufacturer Great Wall Motor.
Regardless of variant, the 2024 MINI Cooper is shown to sport a cleaner look while still maintaining the brand’s iconic design language. Gone are the fender flares and side scuttles, while in front is a new octagon-shaped silver trim surrounding its grille area, along with circular headlamps with daytime running light elements. Besides that, its sides now feature flush door handles, whereas its back has triangular tail lights that are connected by a black strip with the Cooper S branding that’s sitting in between. Meanwhile, the top of the car can be installed with an optional panoramic glass roof.
On the inside, found in the centre of the dashboard right beside the steering wheel is a circular 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen that also doubles as the instrument cluster. It runs on the Android-powered Mini Operating System 9 which offers numerous functions such as navigation, climate control, media and so on. Not all of these features are handled by the touchscreen, as found beneath it is a toggle bar that accommodates the gear selector, engine start turn key, experience mode switch, and volume control. Also at the front is an open storage compartment and a wireless charger for mobile devices.
Additionally, MINI says its upcoming three-door EV will be available in four trims: Essential, Classic, Favoured, and John Cooper Works (JCW). Essential features black sports seats, Classic has 2D knitted textile surfaces, while Favoured brings a two-tone houndstooth pattern on the knitted-textile instrument panel. The last trim, on the other hand, offers JCW seats covered with a combination of multi-colored knitted textile and black synthetic leather with red stitching.
As with its predecessor, the 2024 MINI Cooper is offered with the usual driver assists such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and so on. The car also comes with an updated Parking Assistant feature that lets it identify parking spaces as well as allowing for automated parking manoeuvres.
Performance-wise, the E variant is equipped with a front-wheel-drive (FWD) electric motor with 184PS (135kW) and 290Nm torque, which allows it to achieve 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds. Thanks to its 40.7kWh battery, the EV is said to have a maximum range of 305km based on the WLTP cycle. Meanwhile, the SE is equipped with a more powerful FWD electric motor with an output of 218PS (160kW) and 330Nm torque, granting a faster 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds. Its larger 54.2kWh onboard battery enables for a maximum range of 402km.
Charging-wise, both options for the 2024 MINI Cooper support up to 11kW via AC-based charging, though DC fast charging differs between the two. More specifically, the E variant can only support up to 75kW while the SE model can support up to 95kW.
Like the MINI Countryman EV, neither BMW or MINI have revealed the pricing details or expected date of availability for the 2024 MINI Cooper. Seeing that it is dated for next year, perhaps we’ll hear more from both companies much later this year or by early 2024.
