With generative AI being all the rage right now, it’s no real surprise to see more and more companies making announcements around them. Tech companies have already used them to enhance existing tech, or made commitments to do so. Though with South Korean tech giant Samsung, the company has announced that it will be using the tech on home appliances instead.
Yonhap News reports that Samsung has plans for integrating generative AI into its home appliances starting next year. The report quotes company head of software development Yoo Mi-Young as saying so during IFA, explaining that the tech “will be applied to voice, vision and display”. As with most other examples of generative AI, this will give the appliances the ability to communicate in a more conversational manner. Beyond that, it will also allow said appliances to better understand what their users want from them, and respond accordingly.
One example provided is the ability for said appliances to be aware of “what kind of food is being cooked in the oven, or what food ingredients are stored in the refrigerator, to be able to provide tailored recipes and dietary suggestions”. Which ties into what the company announced today – a service that provides a personalised, AI-powered food and recipe platform that it calls Samsung Food. The company claims that it can offer over 160,000 recipes to cater to your own personal needs. All this can be accessed via the eponymous app for Android and iOS, which you can for free get by hitting the link below.
Naturally, the features provided by the app will work better with Samsung home appliances. And that’s probably where the generative AI for some of the home appliances come in. For other appliances, the report shows an image of what looks like a vacuum cleaner adjusting suction power on the fly based on air pressure and brush load. Beyond that, it remains to be seen what generative AI can do to improve the home appliance experience.
