Veteran video gaming brand Atari (in collaboration with Plaion) has unveiled the 2600+, a miniature and modernised version of its classic Atari 2600 console – more specifically, the iconic four-switch version that was released in 1980. This throwback machine is 80% of the size of the original. While smaller, it is not completely palm-sized like the Sony PlayStation Classic and Super NES Classic that came before it.
The new Atari 2600+ is not just a simple re-release either, as it does come with several modernised features and improvements. These come in the form of HDMI and widescreen support, a light up Atari logo in front, and an enlarged cartridge socket to prevent game carts from getting stuck.
Then there’s the console’s biggest highlight, which is its ability to play both Atari 2600 and 7800 games. However, you’ll need the original cartridges if you wish to play classics such as Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Pong, Battle Zone, or Mario Bros (yes, you read that right). Worry not if you’re unable to track them down, as included together with the 2600+ is a 10-in-1 game cart that comes with Adventure, Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, RealSports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball, and Yars Revenge.
Besides that, also in the box is a CX40+ controller to play your games with, though note that it lacks any modernised features and still requires a wired connection to the console. If you’re planning to bring a partner along for your trip down pixelated memory lane, then you may want to buy a second unit for US$25 (~RM116).
While on the subject of pricing, the new Atari 2600+ is slated to launch in select markets around the world on 17 November 2023 for US$130 (~RM605). Pre-order for the throwback console is available now via the company’s official website, though we should note that it does not ship to Malaysia. Nevertheless, there’s still a chance that local retailers will import the machine by the time it is released.
