UPDATE (10:50 AM 25 August 2023): Threads on web is now live for us. As stated before, some features like editing your own profile is not present.
ORIGINAL STORY (12:00 PM 23 August 2023):
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported that the web version of Threads, an Instagram app, will go live as soon as this week. Now, multiple reports have surfaced noting that it has finally happened. But as is the norm these days, for better or worse, the rollout process is a gradual one, so we’re not among those who have access to it yet. At least not at the time of writing anyway.
That being the case, the web version of Threads is still pretty far from parity with its mobile counterparts. Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai tells The Verge that the web version of the social media platform still won’t let you edit your profile or send a post to Instagram DMs, among other things.
With that being said, at the very least Threads on web is going to be more than just limited navigation with someone’s post or profile being the odd starting point. It wasn’t even possible to do basic social media things such as liking or sharing posts before. With this web rollout, you’ll get those, as well as familiar social media platform features like a home page as well as naturally the ability to actually compose a post of your own. There looks to be a search tab in the UI, which was a feature that was previously announced as coming soon. It’s also there in the mobile app version of the platform, and looks to be working fine.
Despite the apparent progress though, it remains to be seen if Threads can reclaim its impressive user numbers when it was first launched. The timing of it was perfect for capitalising on unpopular decisions made by X, previously Twitter, but launching in a barebones state with an incomplete feature list looks to have bled a lot of its early users.
