When it comes to text formatting, a messaging app doesn’t necessarily need a lot of options. But that has not stopped some of the service providers in the space from going the extra mile to provide them. Meta subsidiary WhatsApp has stuck with the simple bold, italics and strikethrough options since their introduction in 2017. But it looks like more options may be coming soon.
WABetaInfo reports that these additional text formatting options were discovered through one of the recent WhatsApp Desktop beta updates. The options in question include quote blocks and bullet listing. There’s also another one called Code Block, which looks to be the most specialised formatting option, and something that would only be used between coders.
Overall, these additions are pretty nice to have to the average user, though it is strange that bullet point formatting is showing up separately from a numbered listing. Another feature that other messaging platforms have, notably Discord, is a spoiler tag. Which doesn’t sound like much, though one can imagine that large groups would likely appreciate it when discussing recent pop culture.
As with most features brought to light this way, there’s no word on when these additional text formatting options will become available to the general public. The report notes that following a WhatsApp Desktop beta debut, they will likely show up on the mobile app beta versions first. No dates for when that would be happening either, at least for now.
