Remember Samsung’s The Freestyle portable projector from last year? Well, just recently announced is a slightly updated version of it, which is apparently enough for the South Korean tech giant to grant it a “Gen 2” moniker.
Like its predecessor, the newer Samsung The Freestyle Gen 2 has the ability to output FHD 1080p (1080 x 1920 pixels) visuals with 60Hz refresh rate, 230 ANSI Lumen peak brightness, and a throw distance of up to 2654mm for clear projections equivalent to a screen size of 100-inches. It also comes with auto keystone, levelling, focus and scaling abilities, and is equipped with a 5W 360-degree speaker with dual audio support (when connected to a compatible device or even a second unit).
Similarly, most of the software-based features are retained from last year’s model. These include the onboard Tizen-powered interface with Smart TV function and pre-installed streaming apps such as Netflix and so on. However, new to the Gen 2 is the built-in Gaming Hub feature, which natively supports a collection of cloud gaming services such as NVIDIA GeForce Now, Xbox Game Pass, Amazon Luna, and others.
Samsung adds that the projector now comes with more memory for a smoother experience, but other specifications such as its battery and the numerous onboard ports are unchanged. Besides that, also included this time around is the company’s power efficient SolarCell Remote.
Surprisingly, the new Samsung The Freestyle Gen 2 is priced at US$799 (~RM3,708), which is actually a hundred dollars less than its predecessor. But like last year’s model, most would agree that it is still considerably pricey for a FHD projector. For the US market, the updated model is now available for pre-order, and is slated to be shipped by 30 August 2023 onwards. There’s still no word on whether it will be available in Malaysia in the near future.
