Last month, the Ministry of Transport announced that it’ll be giving away a RM300 flight ticket subsidy for IPTA students to travel between East and Peninsular Malaysia. The subsidy is now made available for redemption in the form of FLYsiswa, which can be redeemed from now until 31 December 2023.
To check if you’re eligible for FLYsiswa, you have to key in your MyKad number as well as the public university you attend on the ministry’s Flight Subsidy website. If it says you’re eligible, you may then go ahead and redeem it from one, and only one, of the participating airlines including Malaysia Airlines, MASwings, Firefly, AirAsia, Batik Air, and MYAirline.
Once you’ve received the voucher code after signing up with your chosen airline, you may then purchase tickets for travel anytime between 15 August 2023 until 31 December 2024. If the FLYsiswa website says that you’re ineligible, you may file an appeal with the Ministry of Higher Education through your university.
One of the caveats to FLYsiswa is that it is only offered to students who are registered at a public university for the 2022/2023 academic year as of 30 June 2023. Moreover, eligibility for the voucher only covers students who:
- Live in Sabah, Sarawak, or Labuan and study in Semenanjung Malaysia;
- Live in Semenanjung Malaysia and study in Sabah, Sarawak, or Labuan;
- Live in Sabah and study in Sarawak or Labuan;
- Live in Sarawak and study in Sabah or Labuan;
- Live in Labuan and study in Sabah or Sarawak.
Students can only purchase one-way or round-trip economy class tickets for travel between their place of origin and their place of study (such as going between Sarawak and Semenanjung Malaysia). You can use the RM300 credit shell multiple times, meaning that if you don’t use up all of it on your first flight purchase, you can use the remainder on your next ticket.
