In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is planning to debut a revamp of its smartwatch series in a year or two, which is believed to be called the “Watch X”. Thankfully, this is not some kind jab at the recent Twitter rebranding, as the X in its name represents the roman numeral for 10.
According to Gurman, the reason behind the naming is to mark the product’s 10th anniversary. To recap, Apple first introduced its Watch product line all the way back in 2014, but was only released the following year. Due to the two different dates, it is speculated that the company could launch the Watch X in either 2024 or 2025, though the former may be the likeliest of the two.
Reason being that Apple is expected to also debut the new Watch Series 9 alongside its next generation iPhone line-up next month. And as you may have guessed, the only number to follow after this so happens to be the number that’s associated with this rumoured revamp.
Speaking of which, people familiar with the product’s development told the Bloomberg reporter that the alleged Watch X will be the biggest overhaul to the series yet. It is believed to feature a thinner case, along with a new mechanism for attaching straps. Gurman adds that Apple has explored a new magnetic band system, though it is unclear whether it will be ready in time to debut on the revamped wearable. Additionally, it is also said to feature a new microLED display to replace the current OLED screens, as well as a technology for monitoring blood pressure.
As for the upcoming Watch Series 9 that’s supposedly coming next month, Gurman says that we won’t be expecting any drastic changes apart from a faster processor. The line-up will also retain the same 41mm and 45mm sizes offered by its predecessor. Pricing, however, is still unknown at this time.
