Insider Gaming reported in September last year that the PS5 may be getting a redesign next month. Part of this is to have the disk drive be detachable, rather than an integrated part of the console. More recently, following the Microsoft and US FTC hearing, rumours of a PS5 Slim started picking up steam. Now, a clip of a new case has appeared online, courtesy of Australian repair specialist Better Way Electronics.
The clip describes the case as being for the PS5 console designated CFI-2016, with the person behind the camera showing off multiple angles of the thing. At a glance, it doesn’t look very slim. Indeed, in an earlier post on X, previously Twitter, the account noted that the shell of the new model is about 5cm or so shorter, but not much thinner. But without a side-by-side comparison with the existing models, it’s pretty hard to tell.

Size difference aside, there are some elements that are clearly different, even at a glance. For one, the faceplates look to be split in two on each side. The USB ports in front are now both USB-C, rather than being split between USB-C and USB-A. Finally, and most jarringly, the case still makes space for an optical drive on one side.
I would say its about 5cm or so shorter, not much thinner. Weird curve in the middle with smaller vents. The BD drive is less curved so it looks weird. Has two ugly black slits on each side of the case. Dual USB-C on the front. Stupid embossed 🔺✖️⭕️⏹️ on the rear.
Boring ASF.

Given its size, it would be very strange if this ends up being officially known as the PS5 Slim. And the presence of an optical drive rules this one out as the much rumoured redesign coming next month. If anything, this looks to be another one of the many redesigns that the console has gone through since launch, with a more overt change on the outside this time around. With the part of the rumour claiming a September release being the only one that is still not challenged, we may find out for sure which is the real deal next month.
