X Announces Lower Ad Revenue Sharing Threshold

Minimum payout is now US$10, slightly over breaking even for the subscription in the first place.

Last month, before Elon Musk changed the name of Twitter to X, the platform begun its first round of the long-promised ad revenue sharing scheme. Now, the company says that it has lowered the eligibility threshold for this, as well as some additional details about the way it works.

The support account for X posted that the eligibility threshold for ad revenue sharing has been lowered “from 15M to 5M impressions within the last three months”. Musk himself would add on that only views from verified handles count towards the 5 million impressions count.

This essentially means that X Premium (fka Twitter Blue) is free for accounts that generate above 5M views.

Note, only views from verified handles count, as scammers will otherwise use bots to spam views to infinity. https://t.co/87MqqyUu2E

The verified handles-only thing aside, it is an odd thing to claim as 5 million impressions within three months was exactly the prerequisite which was announced last month. Going through the Internet Archive, we find that this threshold was quietly raised to the aforementioned 15 million on 22 July, just a week after the scheme was made public.

Another seemingly reduced bar to hit is the minimum payout. The platform claims that it was previously US$50 (~RM229), and it has now been lowered to US$10 (~RM46). Which means if you make the minimum payout, your premium subscription to X may just pay for itself, depending on which platform you used to do so in the first place.

On one hand, genuine users of the platform may actually use X Premium as another source of income. But on the flip side, be ready to more accounts posting ragebait to increase engagement on their posts following this promise of easier payouts.
